I know b/c when I tried to do my own radio install on the 89 535, the wiring harness wouldn't fit. I think 89 models have a unique "plug". In any case, the installer simply spliced the factory connections to the head unit's wires. Should be easy, but I opted for the professional install since it was only $20 more and for my brand radio, if professionally installed, the warranty is extended. Therefore, I can't tell you what to do. Your best bet is to have it installed. Beware, that if you didn't buy the radio from the installer, usually they would charge you a hefty fee. If you want to do it yourself, go to and ask the question in the forums there. Those guys are professionals, most know what they're talking about - some are even installers/shop owners. It's a good place to do comprehensive research BEFORE you buy anything audio (kinda like here when it comes to cars). Good luck!

Metra also makes a harness that works. I got mine from, they are one of the best install shops in the country, they know their stuff. I think that I paid around $25-$30.

I had the same problem, many people told me stories about how they would need to hack my car apart but this harness and my self-powered eclipse deck work fine.

93 525ia sharked, tight, not quite as magical with the bottle caps and snows
