On just about any engine (and especially the BMW motors), a new cam at 45K miles would be quite out of the ordinary without serious misuse, abuse, or a known manufacturing flaw. If the original owner had gone 45K on that M30 engine without required valve adjustments, there may have been problems and WOULD have been noise.

In the absence of outright abuse or oil starvation, it would sound like the dealer did a bit more work than was required to fix the problem, and pocketed the money.

I'm deciding whether to buy a 93 535i. At 45000 miles, service records show a replacement camshaft. According to the service manager, the customer reported "noisy valves." Another 5000 miles have been put on the car without any problems. Is such a replacement weird or common? Comments? Thanks. P.J.
