I'm very sorry to report that my 95 540i/6 was involved in a hit and run accident. In the same breath I'm very happy to report that my wife and my 3 month old son came away unscathed. My wife was driving down the highway at 0530 with the cruise set at 70 mph when all of a sudden someone slammed into the right rear of the car. The hit shot her into the left lane. She said that she was able to immediately get the car under control and noticed a maroon dually pickup just keep on going at a high rate of speed. Because it was dark, and that my son started crying, she was unable to get a license plate number. There were no witnesses. She was in the right lane when the crime occurred which would indicate that the truck was off the road when she was hit. My guess is a drunk, or sleeping, or both, driver. The car did it's job by taking the brunt of the blow, allowing my wife and son to walk (& roll)away without loosing control.
I was out of town when this happened so I haven't seen the car. But when my wife called to tell me that they were OK and to tell me about the damage she got very upset because she has seen my dedication to maintaining the car in perfect condition. After reassuring her that the important thing was that they were OK, I had to litterly sit down when she descibed the damage.
The right rear was pushed up and into the rear door. The fuel tank dropped down (as designed). The roof was buckled. The unibody is bent. With this kind of damage from a moving rear collision, I can't imagine how fast this moron was going. It is also a testiment on how well these cars are built. The repair shop confirmed her report and added that damage to the suspension was unknown until they could open it up. The repairman said he was going to use only OEM parts. He also said that if he could find an undamaged rear clip off of another 95 540i that that would be more solid than putting in individual oem parts. The reason given was that by using a complete clip it would save him atleast 100 welds. Sound right?? I will post pics when I get them.
I wanted to avoid throwing up my Thanksgiving dinner so I chose not to see the car till next week. My insurance company is State Farm. They have appeared to be responsive to all of my requests. I have accepted that my car will no longer have matching panel serial numbers, I just hope it will come back as solid as it was.
Any info on repair work, etc. would greatly be appreciated.
