Your experience with the older film yellowing is correct. The UV inhibitors now used are very effective. We guarantee our film for 4 years with expected life w/out notice degradation is 6-8 years. Your experience with the difficulty in removal comes from the type of adhesive the supplier uses. The adhesive Chase Technology uses allows the user to remove the film if necessary. If you have to replace the film every 5 years, verses replacing a light every 2-3 years, you are saving a lot of money as well as maintaining headlight performance during that time frame.
More technical information can be found at:

I've been running 40mil for about 6 years, while I've had no breakage, the film does yellow and pockmark over time. This deteriation does effect the light. This film if applied correctly is nearly impossible to get off without damageing the lights.
