Do the engine check code test. Below is an excerot from another post on how to do it. Get the codes and then go to the website at.....
http://www.gis.nsw.gov.au/staff/rnott/bmw/BMWtext/technical/MotronicFaultCodes.html
and see what the codes indicate, Id do it ASAP

Jeff, you can also check by doing the 5-jab pedal test (works on most early e34s). Turn key to ON, not start, and then jab the gas peddle to the floor five times. The 'check engine' light should flash one long then go into the 4digit error code(s). For a bad O2 sensor, you will see 1 flash, then 2, 2 more, then 1, 1-2-2-1, ends with another long flash....likely will repeat. After doing this you can clear all codes by briefly disconnecting your battery (have your radio code handy ;^) Let me know if any other codes show up (all codes are four digits, and start with 1-2, except 1-4-4-4 which means end of diagnosis. good luck.
