Stupid engine cover (brackets) 540 (archive)

I have the standard engine cover between the cylinder banks on my 540i. I don't particularly care about it, other than it probably provides noise dampening.

What drives me nuts is the brackets that hold it to the intake manifold. Each seems to be comprised of two steel (understandable) pieces linked with hard rubber or bakelite material (what were they thinking?). If the nuts are tigtened on the outside of the cover or the threads stick, loosening the outside nut spins the top 1/2 of the bracket and breaks it off from the bottom. The cover will stay in place without the brackets holding it (conformed to intake manifold), but...

WHAT were they thinking? Am I missing something? Seems like solid brackets would solve the entire issue. Anybody else have this problem? What did you do besides pay the stealer $50 a set?
