I'm not too sure about your "downshift" suggestion. Downshifting at high revs will cause a braking effect which corresponds to stomping on your brakes without the benefit of ABS. This could result in a spinout.

wheels still are turning when downshifting. i find it a more controllable braking action. in some extreme icy conditions it may not work as well, but like in my first post- one must find what works for themselves in differing conditions.
