Steering column move up and down (archive)

I have a 95 540I with telescoping steering. When the steering wheel is fully adjusted away from the driver, I can rock the steering wheel/column up and down. When the wheel is full adjusted towards the driver, the wheel is solid and I am unable to move/rock the wheel which is the way its supposed to be. I also observed that the loosness only happens at points away from the driver and close to the dash board.

Is this something I should be worried about? Is it something I can fix myself?

Thanks in advance.
