Besides chewing the hell out of the roads, studded tires lack optimum control on all surfaces other than possibly snow. On dry or wet roads contact between rubber and road surface is minimized resulting in decrease in response and control. On very cold ice the studs will not penetrate the ice surface causing the car to "skate" across the ice.
Unless someone lives in an area of constant extreme snow conditions, with the tire technology available today it's difficult to justify the use of studs.
