Mike, I have a 90 535iA w/180K & live in NJ. I don't get as much snow as you, but problems in the rain WITH new tires means there is something wrong with your setup.
First, tire condition and your tire selection make a big difference!! A snow tire, of course, is the best for winter, but I use "all season" due to the cost of having two sets of tires. I selected to use the Pirelli P7000SS tire, because this is an "all season" tire plus it's also rated "M&S". Not ALL "all season" have a M&S rating. M&S=more traction in adverse conditions. Next, there is a hydroplaning rating on the side of the tire - the higher the number the more traction in the wet(rain). Mine is 92W. The sizes are 235/45 17(f) & 245/45 17(r).
Next, make sure the suspension is TIGHT ! This is absolutely necessary to keep that tire planted properly at all times. Soft suspension results in a loose rear end. My suspension setup is detailed in the Registry. For snow accumulation, I also add barbell weights in the trunk & on the floor in the back seat - about 100lbs total.
With my setup, I have very little hydroplaning in the rain - I am able to maintain 70-75mph in almost any rain pour ! I live on a hill & so far I haven't had enough snowfall that has stopped me from getting home(that's with the weights added, which I always add whenever it snows).
