I've heard that the reason for the long waits is because the X5 is a much more profitable vehicle and BMW is pushing a larger percentage of the V8s into the X5, not leaving enough allocation for the 540i.

Anyone else hear this?

remember, the 7 also has that magnificient V8. I don't think they're going to ramp down 7 production for X5s.

In general, I have found that dealers tend to shy away from ordering 540s- the lease rates aren't that far from a 740, and at those price ranges, most people lease. Only speed freaks (like myself) go for 540s. good luck finding a stick one, too. (once again, like mine :) )

so, if you want one, chances are you're not going to find one on the lot, and you'll have to order it. hence the perceived limited availability. It's just dealers not wanting to get stuck with cars that are hard to sell.
