95 525i (e34) transmission problem (archive)

transmission doesn't go into 3rd or 4th gear. At 4K rpms, trans prog warning comes on. No previous symptoms. 103K miles and I just had filter and fluid replaced at 87K. Dealer wants $2600+ to replace tranny. Should I go to tranny shop for repairs? What is reasonable for this repair or replacement best option?
