I've got a 535i and when I first got it, the stock muffler was blown out, so the sound and performance were essentially the same as running straight pipes (retaining the upstream silencer and cat).

I had it in the shop for some suspension work and they had to replace it because it was falling apart. Supposedly they put on an Ansa muffler, although I'm not too confident this is really the case. I was under the impression that the Ansa's had chrome tips and this one does not.

In any event, I noticed a big drop in low end grunt when I drove away. I'm not sure how it would compare to a functional stock muffler however because I never had one. But I am tempted to go the no muffler route again. As pointed out already, it sounds cool and performs better.
