I have the same problem on my 91 525ia, I talked to a few shop and get prices from $1600 to $2800 to rebuild, the guy with the $1600 changed his mind and don't want to work on it anymore. I looked at a few site that reman transmission and saw some with 18,ooo miles 18mths warranty for $1700. this is the same transmission in the Honda Passport and isuzu trooper, you may want to buy it as one of those cars as it might be cheaper, i have not fixed mine yet as it is still drivng and don't slip all the time, also a friend of mine tell me to make sure it is the tranny before i spend so much money and he works on tranny but only domestic.
transmission doesn't go into 3rd or 4th gear. At 4K rpms, trans prog warning comes on. No previous symptoms. 103K miles and I just had filter and fluid replaced at 87K. Dealer wants $2600+ to replace tranny. Should I go to tranny shop for repairs? What is reasonable for this repair or replacement best option?

Thanks in advance
