In Reply to: Hints/Tips on Front Strut Replacement on '94 540i? posted by Joe G on December 15, 2000 at 10:58:53:

I found the worse thing was unbolting shock from the shock guide (top bearing). If you get a 7/8" sparkplug 1/2" drive socket with a hex(usually also 7/8")on top, you can use an allen socket with an extention down thru the sparkplug socket. Hold the plug socket with a closed or open end wrench. These suckers are usually very tight. Undo the brake calipers at the carrier to strut bolts and support, that way no disassembly is required. On the front struts you will have to use spring clamps.

Anyone have any tips or hints on replacing the front strut-carts on a 94 540i?? I'm going to tackle the job today.. Replacement units are BOGE Turbo-Gas..

Is it possible to replace the units without removing everything that Bentley calls for??

Do both front wheels need to be off of the ground at the same time? I suspect so, as the suspension is loaded otherwise (sway bar, etc.)...

Thanks in advance for any tips!
