The guy claimed his Passat had them and he believed they were "as good as most snow tires" .

"As good as" is the key word... meaning not exactly snow tires. Beside this, you are tampering with the engineering of the tire characteristics.

Snow tires rubber are different compound than your yoko... softer, plyable, and stronger.
