I just recently bought a 1990 535i. I am not satisfied with the stiffness in the steering wheel. It feels more like a "Cadillar or Buick" soft and easily turnable. But this is a scary feeling at high speeds. Are they supposed to be very stiff or not? Or do they come with variable power assist: the faster you drive the tighter they get?

Are these loose steering normal in these models?

A BMW dealership said the steering box needs to be changed, Cost $1500
An independant garage said it is normal.

Can you please give me some knowledge on this subject.
Thankyou.
