Timing Chain '92 535i and Ho Ho Ho!! (archive)

I am fixing a blown head gasket myself (ACK) and I want to know if anyone has a strong suggestion about replacing the timing chain. It appears to be a major pain in the arse to take off the rest of the covers and power steering pump, and water pump, etc. The guides do not have grooves, they have some light scuffing, and the chain and gears look good. Can I give this pain a miss?
