Ive looked for the paint code but cant find it. I have a black 89 525i...if they only made 1 black for that year, does someone have the code?
Finally, how much is BMW paint and is that the way to go with their paint?

matt, as Gordon wrote, the paint code should be on the passenger side shock tower. Usually a german spelling of the color, followed by a bmw part number (3 digits). If i remember right from my trusty '89 sales brouchure, there were 2 types of black, solid and metallic (Cosmos black?). I think it was factory original for either of the black paints to have the metallic black bumpers. Sooo, if you want to keep it 100% original....
BMW paint is excellent, but for your '89 it may be overpriced. Sikkens is a very good german paint and will give you the same factory "satin" finish. [the BMWs and M-B from the late 80s--early 90s typically don't have as much gloss as their american counterparts]. Shop some of the reputable shops in your area, ask to see their work, ask your local bmwcca chapter if you can, and by all means get everything in writing.

Good luck, and post the pics when it's done!
