I got my mom a Kodak DC-280 and I have a Nikon CoolPix 990. They both take great pics, and do video. The Kodak has built in templates for borders and other little things some people love (like my Mom). The Nikon has much more control over the photos though. Both have similar capabilities (color/B&w, exposure, flash control, etc.) but the controls seem more useable on the Nikon. The Kodak also has the LCD panel right where your nose goes if you use the viewfinder - so you'll be wiping that endlessly. The Nikon is large - but the twist head is great for those odd shots (over a crowd twisted so you can see the pic). They also both use Compact flash cards which are more sturdy and secure (I have used the other smartmedia on an MP3 player and hate it). You should also get a SanDisk or other brand USB drive ($30) to stick the card into for your PC - it acts just like a floppy that way and saves infinitely on batteries. As for batteries - they are both hogs, but if you get the newer nickel-metal hydride batteries you can recharge and save $$$ - they last longer than alkalines for me as well. hope this helps (sorry for the length) Eddie
