I narrowed my search down to the Olympus 490, Kodak 290 (since replaced by the 3400) and the Nikon 800. They're all 2 megapixel models with LCD dispays for the menus and for composing/viewing pictures.

I went with the Olympus, mostly because I thought it's ability to shoot upt to a minute of QuickTime video would be neat. It's kinda gimmicky. But my parents and in-laws like getting little videos of our daughter. The Kodak had the simplest user interface and a built in USB port. I bought a USB card reader for my iMac. The Nikon was, well, a Nikon, but it didn't have the 3x optical zoom and didn't have the ability to take rapid fire shots - important when you have a little kid.

Honestly, I would have been happy with any of the three. $500 seems to be a nice sweet spot for features per dollar. Two hundred bucks more and you're into the 3 megapixel cameras.

Ger chargeable batteries and keep some alkalines around just in case. These things eat cameras like Rosie O'Donnell eats pizzas.
