Yeah, I'd like to find the "real" answer to this question myself as the car manual is kind of vague and confusing about this issue. I think the E is for Economy driving and just means it's fully automatic. The M is manual, and I think that means you can force the car into specific gears. If you notice, when you have it set for M and are in D or 3 while your car is in idle, and then you release the brake, it doesn't want to go. This is different from just shifting down to 3 in E mode, because it won't actually engage 3 until you surpass the proper speed. When you have it in M, it forces it to whatever gear you have... 4th is disabled however. I think it's doing something with the clutch or what not, I'm still not very clear on it. Correct me if I'm wrong anybody, cause I don't really know much. :) Happy New Year!
Does anyone know how the transmission in the E34 is used when put in "M" manual mode? Can this be used in daily driving? Or is it for only during inclines and pulling heavy loads, i.e., boats/jetski?
