"E" is for normal highway driving where higher gears are actuated sooner/low rpms and where 4th gear keeps the rpms down at highway speeds. "M" is for shifting manually for each of the 3 gears this and no automatic upshifting or downshifting will occur. Use "M" for more sporty driving where the driver has control of shifting or use it to select a higher gear when taking off in snowy or slippery conditions to maximum traction. "S" is for more sporty driving preference and still have the automatic shifting convenience. Upshifts occur at higher rpms and 4th is not used. "S" can also be used in city driving to avoid the hunting problem between 3rd and 4th at speeds around 40-50mph.
Does anyone know how the transmission in the E34 is used when put in "M" manual mode?
Can this be used in daily driving? Or is it for only during inclines and pulling heavy loads, i.e., boats/jetski?
