btw, I have a manual '90 535i and my wood trim aroud the shifter comes up very easily (like 15 seconds, no tools, I can have it out). Perhaps the automatic is more difficult?
For my particular situation, I called around and the best I could do was a used one for 100.00. Alas, it was too long after purchase, and it was no longer 100.00 out of 14,500.00. It was just a 100.00 bill, and I didn't want to pay it. The actual replacement, however, is very easy on mine.

My insurance company reimbursed me for replacement on mine. The guy who tried to steal the stereo and phone scratched it up. If you're going to remove it for repair be very careful when prying up since the wood is laminated to metal. If you're just going to replace it don't worry about tearing it up.
