no, e39 had 4.4 from the start. there are no 4 liter e39s.

the e39 is not that much heavier than the e34, due to the extensive use of aluminum in the suspension. methinks the e39 would creep slightly ahead, although prob not by much.

E34 540i and first generation E39 540i both have the same 4.0L V8 with 282hp and 295lb-ft of torque right? I think it was into the second year of the E39 540i production that they swapped to the 4.4L V8. Anyways, if you ran a E34 540i vs. a first generation E39 540i (both with the 4.0L V8), both with 5-speed automatic, which one would come out ahead? I heard the E39 is heavier than the E34...I dunno about the gearing though...and whether or not the 5-speed automatic is the same between the two cars. Thanx a lot!
