To locate a noise in the engine, take a screwdriver and stick the handle to your hear lobe. Place the metal tip of the screwdriver to the area you want to investigate.

I agree with Gordon, after a while, the injectors gets really noisy. Stick the screwdriver to them you can hear them.

'89 535i noisy injectors too.
