I've messed with this too. I would suggest having your mechanic set your valves to .012 COLD (like, overnight cold) before you invest any cash in replacing parts. I thought my injectors were noisy but the valves had been set to .014 and they made quite a clatter at that setting.

Yes, the injectors will tick a bit but I think more often than not it's the valves.

i hear a ticking noise coming from around the intake manifold when my car is running. when i asked my local european mechanic, i was told that this is normal due to the fact that the M30 motor had mechanical lifters as opposed to hydrolic ones. this still doesn't seem right to me. (the ticking is pretty noticable). i have had a valve adjustment done 7 or 8 thousand miles ago, so it shouldn't be the valves.

any help that you can give would be greatly appreciated!!!
