Scrid,
Your windshield should be installed with
a set of little clips around the circumference.
These clips should sit just below the surface of
the glass. Into these clips are mounted the
window moulding/trim. This trim covers the gap
between the body opening and the edge of the glass. It edge of the trim/moulding should sit
flush on both the surface of the glass as well as
on the body of the car. The only thing that should
stick up into the airflow are the two water
management channels. These are a vertical channel
on the left and right sides (just forward of
the A-pillars), and should not cause a signficant
amount of additional wind noise.
It's not uncommon for a ham-fisted glass installer
to do the clips wrong such that the clips or the
trim/moulding are not down flush against
the glass. The result is noticably higher
wind noise on the high-way.
