The E38 tire/rim combo he has (225/55-16) is only 3.3% (smaller) than the stock size (225/60-16) you mentioned. I don't know why he chose the 55-series tire; perhaps the tire he wanted was not available in a 60-series.

If he did go with a 17" rim, you're right, he'd likely want to make a tire-size adjustment to get closer to stock. According to the calculator, the difference between E32 "stock" and the 17" package from my car is 4.9% (17" package is smaller in diameter).
