Sugar in gastank harming engine is a myth. (archive)

I read on MSN Carpoint that the sugar would either sink to the bottom of the tank since it is heavier than fuel, and that sugar doesn't dissolve in the fuel either, so that the fuel filter would catch it before it got to the engine. So my guess is that the engine stopped running for other reasons.
