'92 525i Trans Prog (archive)

After just purchasing a '92 525i, I steam-cleaned the engine and now the information display reads "Trans Prog" and the "Check Engine" light stays on. Also, the transmission stays in high gear at all times. I tried shutting off the engine and re-starting it, but after 10 or 15 seconds, both lights come on again. Any ideas on how badly I screwed things up and what I can do to correct the problem? Thanks in advance for any help you send my way.
