Steam & bad smell from engine compartment... (archive)

Wondering if this has happened to anyone... Drove my '95 525 Touring to Central Calif. On the way back, I was cruising up the "Grapevine" (steady incline for 30 min.) running at 3500rpm. When I stopped for gas near the top, I noticed a strong smell coming from the right front side with steam coming out by the right front tire near the door jam. Is this weird? Kind of smelled like brakes or burnt oil. Checked my oil dipstick which was fine & coolant was fine. No warning lights came on & the engine was running smoothly. Any thoughts? Do I need to take it to the dealer & have it checked out? Thanks for your advice!!
