my experience is 4 to 5 years as well. if you want to play it safe, dump the battery.

when the original battery died in my 5er, also a '95 model, it gave me no warning at all. went into the store, came out, instrument cluster was very dimly lit and the car didn't even try to turn over when i tried to start it.
