No, It is not a M 540 for 540 Sport, just a plain 540i. Thanks for the thoughts

You will *never* bring the E34's performance up to M3 levels. Think structural rigidity, wheelbase and other physical unalterable aspects.

'Investing' in the E34 (btw, is it an M one ? if it's one of those 135 then keep it, end of story) is not an investment. It will never get bring you back the money you put into it.

The M3 on the other hand is going to be quite pricey insurance wise. Are you sure you can give up the space of the 5er ? If you're 5th on the cabrio list, you might still get it later than you would if you were 100th on the coupe list. I've never heard of BMW ever sym-shipping two (radically) different versions.

Now getting back to your question, (better value for the money) I would say it's definitely the M3. First it's an M, then it will always be an M and a rare car.
Still, if that doesn't seem too 'wise', investing another 15k is something *I* wouldn't consider. Better off selling it and getting an absolutely awesome E34 M5. Grey market too, in that range (40k) - brought from Germany, 100k km on the clock, 360hp..

PS. I wouldn't lean my ear to advices of the 'first year is bad' kind. Total BS.
Also - I don't care much for V8s (BMW or not), I guess you figured that out..

Hi,
I have a 95 540i 6spd with 62K mi that I bought 8 months ago--I really like this car. Recently, my finances have improved to where I can now afford a new m3. I am #5 on list for a m3 cab, even tho I would prefer a coupe--the coupe list was too long.I planned to sell my 540, but now I am having second thoughts. The m3 cab will run about 55K--and I am wondering if I would be better off spending 10-15K to Dinanize my 540i to bring it performance up to the level of the M3. I was a thinking of a supercharger and Stage II suspension. What do you all think is the better value for the money--having about $35 to 40K invested in the 540, or about $55K in a new M3???
