The 530 has about %75 of the 540's power, and slightly less (say, %73) of the 540's torque. The M50 525i has about %90 of the 535's power, and about %80 of the 535's torque. I say this because I have both a 535 and a 525 (automatics). I find the 535 to be significantly more powerful, with lots more drivability due to the readily available torque. Granted, my 525 is the Touring, thus has a ~300lb weight penalty, but my point is the power difference is striking when driving both cars. Given that the V8 e34s are heavier than their I6 ancestors, I would think that 215 hp and 214 lb-ft torque on the 530 can't compare to the 285 hp 295 lb-ft torque that the 540 produces. Given my experience of differently powered e34s, between those two cars I wouldn't consider the 530 even though I'm sure it has adaquate power. It's M5 or 540 from now on. ;-)

Hi all!

I'm considering buying an E34.

I'm already leaning toward a 540... but is the 530 close enough in performance to the 540 that finding that low mileage *perfect* 530 should sway me to that car?

I'm anticipating that the 540 has far more performance from it's larger engine, which should equate to a lot more
(torque) fun!

Also, are aftermarket suspension mods necessary to get rid of unwanted body lean or did BMW produce a "sports suspension" as standard on the 540 vs. the lesser 5ers?

feedback?

steve
