There are numorous reasons for any and all automobiles to suddenly loose engine power. If you have the ignition switch in run, you should only loose power assist to the vehicles steering and brakes. This is not to say that that is not dangerous or frightening when it occurs, but you do have the ability to control and stop the vehicle. Rootcause?? I'm not certain if it retains a fault code after occurance or resets?

You should not lose the ability to brake or steer, only lose the power assist of those two controls. It takes more force, but you shouldn't have to curb it to stop the car.
