I think my E-34 540i may be in need of some front end work. Before I take it to the shop I'd like to have some ideas about the likely problems and whether there are preferable after market or BMW "upgrades" from simple factory replacement parts.

In particular is there any history of these cars causing premature strut failure?

The car has the "Sachs Sporting Set" (springs and struts) on it.
