In Reply to: 16" or 17" Rims for 535? posted by Tim on March 18, 2001 at 16:41:02:

On my previous 90 535i, I did Eibachs with Bilstein Sports and RD stress bar, before upgrading to 17". I used 235/45wr17(front) and 245/45wr17(rear) Pirelli P7000 SS tires. After the upgrade, I actually had to have a couple other people(plus the wife) who knew the "old" feel drive the car to get other opinions. The car actually felt smoother than the 15 inchers. Even over rough roads! Totally baffled me ! I felt I should have gotten the 18ers, since the ride wasn't that bad......but then the cost.....Big potholes, however, does cause the car to bottom out. As far as weight, I couldn't tell the difference in terms of performance. With the Pirellis tho, I was still able to maintain 70mph in any wet without hydroplaning!
Anyway, all setups is a matter of personal taste, but, my advice is to make sure whatever you do, get a quality tire designed for performance, has a M&S rating, and designed for smooth ride. I only know about Pirelli.
I am also curious about the H&R springs and would like an update about the ride after installation. But, the Eibach feel, I think, will be hard to beat. Here's a pic of my car....

Buying BBS RK's this week for my 535 with H&R/Bistein Sports
I love the look of 17" wheels but not sure if the ride penalty and increased weight is worth it. Any thoughts?
