My '93 525ia is idling at about 3,000 rpm in park or neutral. I cannot engage the transmission until the car idles down to about 2,000 rpm. Cannot get it to go any lower than that. When the tranny is engaged, rmp's will not drop below 1500.

Doesn't seem to matter if the engine is cold or warmed up.

At one point, the engine returned to its normal idle and ran just fine. I turned it off, started it up again, and the problem returned.

Thermostat and water pump have been replaced in the past 4 weeks.

I'm going to check light fault codes to see if its anything obvious. Can find nothing on Archives.

Thanks for any help.

Ed,
You either have a massive vacuum leak or more likely a bad idle air valve. It's located behind the throttle body, under the intake manifold.
