I don't appear to have the metal shavings. The bearings are noisy but not disintergrating. The whine is a PITA. I am going to try the heavy duty redline oil and see how I go.

While replacing my speedo sensor in the rear end, my mechanic noticed some fine metal filings on it. He told me this was the pinion bearing (I think I have the name right) and that it would have to be replaced soon.

My car has 250,000 kms (156,000 miles) on it.

Is this something that can be a) purchased used, b) rebuilt. I'm trying to avoid spending the $600+ CDN to make the repair.
