did a oil change, but have a question (archive)

I did my first oil change on my '91 525 and it was simple. The air filter was a little more difficult. But while I was under the car to loosen the oil pan nut, I notice 3 or 4 screws holding a small plate under the oil pan. What is that? It had a little oil around it, but not dripping.
