I think not Bill all the Electric would need to be changed phsicaly the engines look similar but the ECU models would be different unless you change the whole wiring system.

A good re-con 525 motor should only be around £500-£600 fitted with a warranty if the body work is up to it or maybe a specialist breaker will do you a deal on a motor out of a write off ,,,

I have to replace my motor in my 89 525i, i have found a m20 motor from a 325i convertible. Do the mounts fit? oil pan? etc.

please help.
