Hi, I have a '92 535i 5 speed, 165k miles, when do I need a valve adjustment? Is this something done on a typical tune-up for this car? Also, what would one need done for a tune-up. After a valve adjustment and tune-up, assuming it needs one, am I going to notice increased performance? Thanks again.

you should do a valve adjustment every 15K mi,at level I+level II service.you will notice a performance enhancement do to more lift on the valve which now has less clearence allowing more of the cam to be used. The best way to accuratly do this is to set them at .12" cold,I mean stone cold!the only draw back to keeping the valves tight is lumpyness of the motor at idle. The only way to smoth the M30 motor is to set the valves loose,I'll keep mine tight to get the benifits of more power. Hope this helps CHIP
