I think $8-9k is too high. Given the problems you highlight, I think you have to plan for a couple grand of expense getting the car back into shape. I bought a 90 5 sp with 135k miles on it, full service records, good condition in-and-out (paint is a little tired) for $7800 a few months back. Since then, I've put about $1,000 into the car with Inspection 2 and some other miscellaneous items.

I'd aim at about 8-9K for this car, probably not much more than that if any. That would also depend on a clean car fax, decent records and if you're not going to be the 7th owner.
You don't mention if you did this but it's worth the $60 or so to have an independent BMW shop do a pre-purchase inspection for you, that way it will give you documented negotiating ammunition. I had this done on a 1988 M5 and they found and showed me, and the owner, where the car had been seriously rear-ended and fixed incorrectly. When the inspection was completed the estimate to put the car into the shape that it was being represented to me was 3-4K. Buyer beware! Shop around unless you can steal this car. Hope this helps some.
