Help - Fuel Pump / Sender Placement in Fuel Tank (archive)

Posted by Barthe on April 22, 2001 at 21:05:15:

I just purchased a 1993 model 525. The fuel sending unit was faulty so I purchased a new one. I checked the Bentley book and then proceeded to replace the fuel sender.

The fuel sending tube was broken off in half. As I pulled off the top of the fuel sending unit, the inner fuel tank hoses were connected to the fuel pump as I expected. I thought the fuel pump would come out with the sending unit.

I found that the pump was attached to a large black plastic square. It appears that the black plastic square box like device should be attached to the bottom of the fuel tank. But it isn't attached to anything. I finally managed to unlock the fuel pump outer ring from the black box and pull the whole assembly out of the fuel tank.

What is the back plastic box type device suppose to fasten to in the fuel tank? Or is it just suppose to free float inside of the tank with the pump to weight it down.

Help, please if anyone knows the arrangement of the pump into the box like assembly. Bentley doesn't even mention the black box.
