The weather was very nice in Central PA today - it nearly got up to 80F - so when my wife and I went out for our 6th wedding anniversary dinner I turned on the AC (didn't think the sunroof was appropriate for such a "formal" occassion). The AC worked fine and cooled us down, except that it would make a hissing/wheezing sound lasting 10 seconds every minute or so. It wasn't a hissing sound like hot radiator fluid blowing out of a leak (don't ask how I know what that sounds like), it was more like the sound you hear on a bad sci-fi movie just before a creepy swamp or bog monster attacks - Very weird. Didn't seem to be driving speed, RPM, or fan speed sensitive, nor did the flow temp or volume seem to change - it just cycled on and off every minute. Anyone have a clue what this might be before I take it in??

I have a similar problem with my '94 530i/5spd. At speed you can feel the compressor turn on/off. At idle, there is a very loud vibration/whine coming from the compressor. I have torqued the compressor bolts as the service manual suggests. A/C seems to work OK but the noise is so bad I turn it off when at idle. Thinking of taking it to a dealer, but not crazy about the possibility of buying a new compressor on a car with only 54K mi. Any suggestions? Does anyone know of a good BMW shop in central NJ or Bucks County/Phila., PA?
