There is a black plastic square in the tank that will not fit through the access opening. I noticed that the black plastic square is designed to be fastened to the bottom of the fuel tank on its four corners with four metal clips that are welded to the bottom of the tank. The fuel pump sits in this black plastic square and is designed to snap in and to snap out for replacement.
I have managed to snap into place the black plastic square and it appears to be firmly in place; however, I did find some black plastic tab pieces in the bottom of the tank which I believed held the square in more firmly on the corners.
So this is how it works: The black square is snapped and held into place on the bottom of the fuel tank just to the side of the fuel gauge level sensor. The fuel pump then snaps into the black square and then the fuel sending unit is set into place over the access cover.
In my case, I believe the black square / pump unit became detacted from the bottom of the tank and then knocked the fuel sending unit downtube off of the fuel sending unit access cover.
I would like to replace the black square so as to get one with new tabs that more firmly held it into place on the bottom of the fuel tank. But, the square it too big for the access hole.
Don't tell me my only recourse is to get a new fuel tank?
Any comments or help would be appreciated.
