A long time ago I bought a thin book titled, "Basic Bodywork & Painting" by Peterson Publishing. It's a very good primer to the whole job and I think an updated version is still in print.

Also, Tim is correct that the prep is everything. One piece of advice, if you do the sanding make sure you don't sand thru the factory primer to bare metal. Unless there is cracking, lifting and/or other severe damage to the factory paint, your goal is to sand off just enough to create a smooth surface for the new paint.
