Sounds like very odd habits. But as far as going from the ED to S3 mode, I think that is normal. S3 according to the manual is "Sport" mode which seems to offer quite a bit more boost but at the cost of worse MPG. But I don't switch between them on the fly. I usually do it from a stop. I only use S3 when i'm out joyriding and wanting to cruise incredibly fast through winding roads, and use the ED for normal work commutes and long drives..
