Catalytic converters do that when you're running too rich, & is a good way to shorten it's life. Change the O2 sensor, even if it's not time yet, a lot cheaper than a new converter. Just my $.02

I have this prob too, I remember reading about it somewhere, but i can't recall the link anywhere, it's some kind of burnoff from the design of the BMW valve system, shouldn't be a problem, just an annoyance.
